Aleksei Gavrilov is a Technical Lead and Staff-level software engineer with more than 12 years of experience building scalable enterprise web platforms, fault-tolerant fintech systems, and highly available microservices. He has led engineering teams across banking, startups, and crypto hardware, and his work centers on backend architecture, payments, and the infrastructure that keeps them reliable.
Since November 2023, he has served as Technical Lead at Tangem, a maker of secure cryptocurrency hardware wallets with more than 1 million devices sold and $23M in Series A funding. He led the architecture and development of an e-commerce platform built on Medusa.js that handles all purchases of the company's products. He built integrations with PayPal, Binance, Ecommpay, and NowPayments, created an analytics dashboard from scratch for user cohort analysis and unit economics, and established CI/CD pipelines on AWS. He also integrated the platform with Xero for financial accounting, developed multi-account support for the Tangem app using derivation paths, and led the integration with the Hedera network.
From June 2022 to November 2023, he was Founding Engineer at erad, a Y Combinator S22 fintech startup providing non-dilutive funding and payments for online businesses. He designed and built a fail-safe payment service available in five UAE countries with 19 million potential customers, which cut grant loaning time from one week to one or two days. He also created a loan management system that supported flexible terms such as floating rates and custom due dates, and designed a fault-tolerant notification service for email and Slack. By optimizing data fetching through Fivetran, he reduced the cost of that service by 30%. His AWS EKS deployment design raised release frequency from once to three times a week and cut regression effort from six to two man-hours. An internal security audit he conducted identified and fixed 20 security bugs.
At Sberbank, from December 2018 to June 2022, he progressed from Senior Software Engineer to Engineering Manager and then Head of Direction in April 2020. The bank serves more than 40 million users, and he contributed to six products there. He designed the architecture and led the development of a fault-tolerant Miro analog for internal use, supporting over 1,000 users working on the same board at once. He was a key member of the team that built the first version of the Russia-wide COVID test personal data processing service. He also redesigned an admin system handling flight and meeting logistics across eight time zones at a 99.99% SLA, and designed the display and PWA interfaces for a delivery robot that automated internal correspondence in high-rise office buildings and became one of the bank's flagship internal products. As a senior engineer, he resolved more than 80 critical production issues and doubled release frequency from two to four per month by reworking CI/CD practices. As a manager, he hired and led 14 engineers and supervised more than 20 School 21 interns, running workshops that earned his team an intern mentoring award in 2020 and 2021.
Earlier, he spent July 2017 to December 2018 as Lead Software Engineer at Promsvyazbank, a national bank serving enterprise clients and government systems. He split a monolithic service into a three-layer architecture, which let the team divide by stack across Java microservices, Node.js, and an Angular frontend. That change raised productivity by 30% and became the foundation for a new engineering team of five. He also designed a middle-layer aggregation service that streamlined API evolution and cut maintenance costs by half. From June 2014 to July 2017, he worked at Profi.ru, a professional recommendation service with more than 10 million clients, first as Software Engineer and then as Senior Software Engineer. As part of the initial team, he built an ELK-based system monitoring service handling roughly 5,000 events a day without incidents, with log screens placed around the office to improve observability. He developed the client personal account, including profile management, order history, active order management, and live chat with specialists, which improved retention and ATR metrics. He also fixed more than 20 critical bugs and vulnerabilities in the order management system.
Aleksei Gavrilov won first place out of 500 participants at VTB More.Tech in 2020 for a multi-component anti-fraud system for web applications. He holds a CodeSignal score of 783 out of 850 and was accepted into the Outtalent software engineering fellowship in 2023, a program with a 1% acceptance rate. It focuses on distributed backend systems and algorithms, with mentors from Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Stripe, and Uber.
He studied computer software engineering at MIREA (Russian Technological University) from 2010 to 2015. His technical expertise spans TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js, Nest.js, React, Next.js, Medusa.js, Python, PHP, and Symfony, along with AWS services including EKS, ECS, S3, Lambda, and SQS. He also works with Docker, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, GraphQL, REST APIs, and gRPC.
